Pick Tulum if cenotes, the Maya ruins on the beach and a smaller town matter most: the nearest cenotes are 3 to 5 km from the centre. Pick Cancún for the shortest airport transfer and big resorts. They are about 120 km apart. Playa del Carmen sits between them, an hour from Tulum by colectivo van.
Choose Tulum if cenotes and the Maya ruins on the beach are why you are going: Cenote Calavera is 3.3 km from the town centre and Gran Cenote about 5 km. Choose Cancún if you want the shortest airport transfer and a large resort strip. The two are about 120 km apart. Playa del Carmen sits between them and suits people who want a bit of both.
This is a cenote site, so the comparison leans that way. If you are mainly after a resort pool and nightlife, weigh the airport and hotel rows more than the cenote rows.

Getting there
Cancún airport is the main gateway to the Mexican Caribbean. ASUR, the operator, counted 29.3 million passengers in 2025, down from 30.4 million in 2024. From there to Tulum is about 120 km on Highway 307: 1.5 to 2 hours by car or private transfer, and about 2.5 hours on the ADO bus, according to the Tulum Times (October 2026).
Tulum has its own airport now. The Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport opened on 1 December 2023, and the drive north into town takes about half an hour. If you find a flight there, the transfer argument for Cancún mostly disappears. Our Tulum airport guide and Cancún to Tulum guide cover buses, transfers and the Tren Maya in detail.
Cenotes: the biggest difference
This is where Tulum wins clearly. Most of the cenotes on this site sit within 25 km of Tulum town:
Road distances from Tulum town centre, OSRM routing, October 2026.
From Tulum you can bike to Calavera and Gran Cenote, or take a taxi there and be in the water within 15 minutes. From Cancún, the same cenotes are a full day out, and the cenote tours we checked from Cancún stop at Canamayte Eco Park or Nohoch Nah Chich rather than the Tulum cenotes above. Cancún’s nearest cenote cluster is the Ruta de los Cenotes inland from Puerto Morelos. Our cenotes near Playa del Carmen guide covers the middle stretch.
Ruins and history
The Tulum ruins are a walled Maya port on a cliff above the sea, a short ride from town. Since July 2026 foreign visitors pay MXN 265 in total and Mexicans MXN 80. From Tulum, Cobá is about 55 km inland and Chichén Itzá is a full day trip.
Cancún has its own small sites in the hotel zone. INAH, Mexico’s national institute of anthropology and history, runs El Rey and San Miguelito, which were once parts of the same settlement, and the Museo Maya de Cancún next to San Miguelito. They are a good half day, but they are not the cliff-top setting people picture when they think of the coast’s Maya ruins.
Beaches
Tulum’s beaches are split between the four inside Parque del Jaguar below the ruins and the hotel-zone road running south toward Sian Ka’an. Access has been a running dispute since 2024, and in 2026 the park has no public car park. Our Tulum beaches guide explains how to reach each one.
Cancún’s resort beaches are in its hotel zone, which runs along Kukulcán Avenue.
Both coasts get sargassum, the brown seaweed that washes up mostly between April and October. Tulum’s advantage on a seaweed day is the cenotes, which are fresh water inland and not affected. See Tulum sargassum.
Tulum vs Playa del Carmen
Playa del Carmen is the compromise. It sits on Highway 307 between Cancún and Tulum. Colectivo vans run from Playa to Tulum for MXN 60, taking about an hour, and the Tren Maya resumed its Cancún to Playa del Carmen service in August 2026 with two morning trips each way.
From Playa, the cenotes at Xpu-Ha (Cenote Azul, Cenote Cristalino, Jardín del Edén) are about 23 km away in a straight line, closer than from Tulum. Akumal’s turtles are about 35 km south, and the Tulum cenotes on the Cobá road are further still.
Pick Playa if you want a bigger town with Fifth Avenue’s shops and plan to split time between Cancún-side and Tulum-side trips. Pick Tulum if cenotes and the ruins are the point.
Safety
No official source ranks Tulum, Cancún and Playa del Carmen against each other. The US State Department’s advisory covers Quintana Roo as one state, and 2025 reporting on it named downtown Cancún, Tulum and Playa del Carmen together when advising care after dark. Read the current advisory before you book. Our is Tulum safe guide covers taxis, cash and the scams visitors report.
Our verdict
- First trip, cenotes are the reason: stay in Tulum. Fly into Tulum if you can.
- Short trip, mostly beach and resort: stay in Cancún and take one long day tour south.
- A week with a bit of everything: split it, or base yourself in Playa del Carmen.
