March is Tulum's driest month, with only about 33 mm of rain, average highs of 30°C, lows of 21°C and the sea at about 27°C. The first half is the better bet. Mexico's Easter school break runs from 22 March 2027 and Easter Sunday is 28 March, so the last third of the month is busy.
Tulum in March has the best weather on paper: it is the driest month of the year, with about 33 mm of rain in the official normals, average highs of 30°C, lows of 21°C and the sea at about 27°C. Sargassum season usually starts in April. Easter is the drawback: in 2027 Holy Week runs from 21 to 28 March and Mexico’s school break from 22 March to 2 April, so the first half of March is the time to come.

Figures are CONAGUA’s 1991 to 2020 normals for the Tulum station, with sea temperature from WeatherSpark. WeatherSpark’s model also names March the driest month, at 34 mm, so the two sources agree here. It rates late November to mid-March the best stretch for general outdoor activity, which puts the first half of March at the end of that window. Nights are a couple of degrees warmer than in February. The hot season, with average highs above 32°C, starts around 13 April.
Crowds and holidays in March
- Benito Juárez Day, Monday 15 March 2027. A national long weekend (13 to 15 March) and a no-school day in Mexico.
- Semana Santa (Holy Week), 21 to 28 March 2027. Easter Sunday is 28 March. Mexico’s 2026 to 2027 school calendar sets the Easter break from 22 March to 2 April 2027 (one press report says 3 April), so the busy period runs into April.
The first two weeks of March, before the long weekend, are the quietest. If you have to travel over Easter, book rooms and small-group tours early, and plan cenote visits for the 8:00 opening. The where to stay in Tulum guide covers each area.
Sargassum in March
The sargassum season usually runs from April to October, heaviest from June to August, so March is normally one of the last clear months for the beach. 2026 showed the season can start early: Tulum had collected 185 tonnes by late January. Check a tracker before you book a beach hotel, and see Tulum sargassum for what to watch.
What to do in Tulum in March
March suits everything, so the order of the day matters more than the choice:
- Cenotes in the morning. Gran Cenote opens at 8:00 and its car park fills by mid-morning. The Tulum cenote map groups cenotes by road.
- A first dive. Non-certified swimmers can try a discover scuba session in an open cenote with an instructor; certified divers can join cavern dives at Dos Ojos. See cenote diving in Tulum.
- Families over Easter. The Casa Tortuga park puts several cenotes on one ticket with a guided swim, which keeps a busy day simple.
- The Tulum ruins at opening, then the beach. Foreign visitors pay 265 MXN in total since July 2026: 100 MXN for Parque del Jaguar plus 165 MXN for the ruins and national park.
- Beach afternoons, while the sargassum season has usually not yet begun. Our Tulum beaches guide lists the public access points.
Cenote tips for March
- Avoid 13 to 15 March and 21 to 28 March at the big names if you can, or arrive at opening.
- Bring cash pesos. Gran Cenote was about 500 MXN in October 2026 guides; most smaller cenotes charge 100 to 300 MXN. Details in cenote entrance fees.
- Cover up instead of sunscreen. The March sun is strong, and many cenotes ban lotions. A rash guard does both jobs; see cenote swimming.
- Plan transport over Easter. Taxis have no authorised tariff in 2026; agree the fare first. See getting around Tulum.

Snorkelling and turtles in March
March sea temperatures of about 27°C make it a good month for the reef. In Akumal, rules reported in March 2026 require visitors to go with a certified guide, in groups of no more than six, and to spend only two to three minutes with each turtle. Off Tulum, boat snorkel trips visit Tulum’s reef, with a view of the ruins from the sea.
March or another month?
February has similar weather with no Easter crowds and a slightly cooler sea. January and December are cooler, with their own holiday peaks. From April the heat and the sargassum season both begin. The full table is in best time to visit Tulum.
