Crowds and events in February

February is a gap between peaks, with two exceptions.

  • Constitution Day, Monday 1 February 2027. A national long weekend (30 January to 1 February), and a no-school day in Mexico’s 2026 to 2027 calendar.
  • Carnival. Ash Wednesday falls on 10 February 2027. Tulum’s own carnival ran later in 2026, from Thursday 26 February to Sunday 1 March, with the main parades on 27 and 28 February. The 2027 dates had not been published in October 2026.

Our where to stay in Tulum guide compares the beach road with town, Aldea Zamá and the cenote hotels on Highway 307.

Sargassum in February

Normally a clear month, because the usual season runs from April to October. 2026 started early, with 185 tonnes collected in Tulum by late January, so check a live report before you choose a beach hotel. If the beach is brown, the cenotes are unaffected; see Tulum sargassum.

What to do in Tulum in February

Settled weather means you can plan the whole week in advance:

  • The cenotes on the Cobá road: Calavera, Gran Cenote, Carwash and Zacil-Ha, all within about 9 km of town.
  • Cave cenotes with a guide. Community-run walks near Chemuyil, between Tulum and Akumal, take you into dark cave cenotes with headlamps; it is the tour featured on this page.
  • The Tulum ruins, then the beach below. Foreign visitors pay 265 MXN in total since July 2026: 100 MXN for Parque del Jaguar plus 165 MXN for the ruins and national park.
  • Sian Ka’an for a canal float or the boat trip to Punta Allen.
  • Akumal to snorkel with turtles in the bay.

Cenote tips for February

  • Mornings are the quietest. Gran Cenote opens at 8:00, and its car park fills by mid-morning.
  • Plan for the long weekend. On 30 January to 1 February 2027, go to the smaller cenotes or start early.
  • Use a rash guard, not sunscreen. Rules differ between cenotes, and the safest choice is no lotion at all. See cenote swimming.
  • Cash in pesos. Most gates take nothing else. Our cenote entrance fees guide lists what each one charges.
  • Stay on one road. The Tulum cenote map shows which cenotes pair up.

Guided options are on our tours page.

What to pack for February

  • Cash pesos in small notes and coins, for cenote gates, lockers and colectivos.
  • A rash guard or long-sleeved swim top instead of sunscreen for the cenotes.
  • Water shoes for the rocky cenote edges, and a towel, since few cenotes rent them.
  • A light layer for the evenings, which are about 19°C on average.
  • A dry bag for your phone on cenote and boat days.

Turtles and the reef in February

The sea is at its coolest, but snorkelling still works. In Akumal, March 2026 reports said visitors must go with a certified guide, at most six people per guide, and spend only two to three minutes with each turtle. Off Tulum itself, boat snorkel trips visit Tulum’s reef, with a view of the ruins from the sea.

February or another month?

January is cooler and busier at the start. March is drier still but brings Easter in 2027 and the start of the hotter months. December has the holiday peak. See best time to visit Tulum for every month.

Questions people ask

What is the weather like in Tulum in February?

Dry and warm. The 1991 to 2020 normals for the Tulum station give an average high of 30°C, a low of 19°C and about 42 mm of rain across the month. The sea is around 26°C, the coolest of the year, though still warm enough for most swimmers. WeatherSpark's cool season ends around 9 February, so the second half of the month is a touch warmer.

Is February a good time to visit Tulum?

Yes, it is one of the best months. You get dry-season weather with fewer people than at Christmas, New Year or Easter, and hurricane season is months away. The busy points are the long weekend around Monday 1 February 2027, Constitution Day, and Carnival. WeatherSpark rates late November to mid-March the best period for outdoor activity, and February sits in the middle.

Is there Carnival in Tulum?

Yes. Tulum's 2026 carnival ran over four days, from Thursday 26 February to Sunday 1 March, with the main parades on 27 and 28 February. The 2027 dates had not been announced in October 2026. Carnival in Mexico is usually tied to the days before Ash Wednesday, which falls on 10 February 2027, but Tulum's 2026 edition came later, so check the town's announcements.

Is the sea warm in Tulum in February?

About 26°C, the coolest of the year according to WeatherSpark's averages, against 29°C from June to October. Most people still swim comfortably. Cenote water stays at about 24 to 25°C all year, so in February the sea and the cenotes are close in temperature. A rash guard helps for long snorkels, and replaces the sunscreen many cenotes ban.

Is there sargassum in Tulum in February?

February is normally clear, since the usual season runs from April to October. 2026 broke the pattern: Tulum had collected 185 tonnes of seaweed by late January. Conditions vary by beach and by week, so check a live tracker a few days before you go, and plan cenote days as your backup.
